Developers Reply to Bad Reviews More Often. Not Faster.

The instinct behind most customer-support advice is "put out the fire fast." Angry review comes in, someone jumps on it, crisis averted. It's a clean story, and it's only half true.

We looked at real developer reply behavior across 2,651 apps in our catalogue - specifically, whether teams treat negative and positive reviews differently, and if so, how. Two separate questions, two very different answers.

Do developers reply to negative reviews more often than positive ones? Yes, clearly. The average reply rate to negative reviews is 43.3%. To positive reviews, it's 32.5% - a real, consistent 10.8-point gap across a large sample. Complaints get more attention than praise, on average, everywhere we looked.

Do developers reply to negative reviews faster? Essentially not at all. 82.9% of replies to negative reviews land in our "fast" response bucket. For positive reviews, it's 83.4% - statistically the same number, not a meaningful gap in either direction. The "very slow" bucket is nearly identical too: 6.6% for negative, 6.3% for positive.

Put those two findings together and a more specific picture shows up than "developers prioritize complaints." Teams aren't dropping everything to extinguish a bad review the moment it lands. They're not visibly faster on the reviews that would benefit most from a fast public response. What they're actually doing is working through more of the negative pile than the positive one, at the same steady pace they handle everything else - triage by volume of attention, not by urgency of response time.

That's a real, useful distinction if you're the one setting the policy. "Respond to negative reviews faster" and "respond to a higher share of negative reviews" sound like the same instruction. Our data says they're not, and only one of them is actually happening at scale right now. If speed is genuinely what moves outcomes with an already-frustrated user, there's real room between where most teams are and where the advice assumes they are.

Figures are computed from Appeye's own tracked catalogue: real Play Store reply-rate and response-time data across apps with enough recent review history to measure both reliably.
