Comics apps have a reputation problem that doesn't show up if you only look at the average star rating. Across 77 apps in the Comics category, 62.9% of ratings are 5 stars — on paper, that looks like a category people love. But sitting right next to that 62.9% is a 17.8% share of 1-star reviews, and once you add the 3.9% who leave 2 stars, the negative share of all ratings in Comics hits 21.7%.

Compare that to the catalogue-wide average negative share of 10.0%, and Comics comes out to more than double the typical rate of 1-and-2-star reviews. That gap — 21.7% versus 10.0% — is the real finding here. It's not that Comics apps are rated badly on average. It's that they're rated in a much more polarized way than most other categories: a large bloc of very happy users, and a much larger-than-usual bloc of very unhappy ones, with comparatively few people landing in the middle. Only 5.3% of ratings are 3 stars and 10.1% are 4 stars — the two middle tiers combined (15.4%) are smaller than the 1-star share alone.

What's driving that split isn't in this dataset — we're looking at rating distributions, not review text — but the shape of the numbers tells its own story. A category with 62.9% 5-star reviews sitting next to a 17.8% 1-star share isn't a category with mediocre apps. It's a category where the same app model seems to delight most users and infuriate a meaningful minority, and where very few people feel lukewarm about it. That pattern is consistent with what you'd expect from apps built around monetization mechanics that either work for a reader or actively work against them — but consistent with isn't the same as proven, and we're not claiming to know the cause from star percentages alone.

What this finding doesn't mean is that Comics is a badly-performing category overall. A 62.9% 5-star share is high in absolute terms, and plenty of categories would take that number gladly. What it does mean is that anyone reading a single average-star-rating number for a Comics app, or for the category as a whole, is missing more than half the picture. Two apps can both average out to a similar-looking overall score while one gets there through broad, mild satisfaction and the other gets there through a landslide of 5-star fans offset by a landslide of 1-star detractors. Comics, at the category level, looks like the second kind.

In Comics, 21.7% of all ratings are 1 or 2 stars — more than double the 10.0% catalogue average.

For anyone operating in this space, the practical takeaway is that the aggregate rating is a weak signal on its own. With 21.7% of all ratings sitting at the bottom of the scale — more than one in five — the interesting question isn't "what's the average," it's "who are these one-star reviewers, and what do they have in common." Are they hitting a paywall, a bug, a moderation issue, a subscription cancellation flow? The distribution can't answer that, but it does tell you the answer is worth chasing, because this isn't a small or noisy deviation — it's more than double the catalogue norm, across a real base of 77 apps.

The broader lesson for reading App Store and Google Play data is the same one this finding keeps proving: star averages flatten distributions that are often the actual story. A category or app can look fine on one number and be quietly bimodal underneath it. Comics, at 21.7% negative against a 10.0% baseline, is one of the clearer examples of that in the current catalogue — and a reminder to always ask what the 1-star and 5-star shares look like before trusting the average in between.
